Kalim says that he might be pretty gullible, while other characters refer to him as being thoughtless and lacking in self-awareness, but is he as oblivious as he seems?
I’d like to add another point in favour of Kalim being self aware. When speaking to Riddle in his School Uniform Vignette, apart from the valid comment he makes on Riddle’s stress taking a toll on him (*cough* Overblot *cough*), he rejects Riddles offer to bring pie because he only eats what Jamil makes him.
At the time, he claims it’s because he often fell ill after eating things others prepared for him, which Riddle accurately deduces is from poisonings, but Kalim doesn’t address the whisper (despite having noted a comment Riddle whispered earlier).
But the thing is Kalim *KNOWS* people are actively poisoning him. He and Jamil regularly talk about testing for poison, he references Aladdin as his reason for trying not to be assassinated (so the assassin won’t commit a crime that can’t be undone or forgiven) and literally says, “Nobody’s tried poisoning me since that time four years ago,” in Book 4 Chapter 7.
I´d say he insists on being oblivious. Because blud has been kidnapped, POISONNED and god knows what, I feel he insists on seeing the good side in everyting so he doesn´t become a paranoid control freak
I think if you play oblivious you get to know how people actually feel about you and those around since they let their guard down around you. Also thinking when you can do much about a situation can be more of a hassle than it’s worth. It’s not perfect, but that’s probably the most control he gets in his life. Like he’s not even allowed to use knives and fire in his lab vignette, but we can see he’s actually a creative and decent learner. Overly sheltered and the guilt that your lucky probably makes it hard to complain about anything on it’s own. Let alone how people perceive rich types complaining. Compared to Ruggie, who is actually really close with the neighborhood kids and grandmas. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kalim though tries is actually not that close simply by nature of his situation. But now I’m just rambling
Sometimes I feel bad for Kalim just cause you have a bright life doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with its dark side. Being unable to talk about your problems simply because you’re told “you have it good so why complain” is just not fair. Other than that I think Kalim isn’t oblivious at all rather he pretends to be. And when someone’s problems become too much (like in book 5 with Vil’s overblot) he becomes more aware and concerned. Like it becomes too much to ignore and so he stops pretending.
I think Kalim is also better at reading people then he let’s on : When in book five he goes checking on Vil after Neige’s performance, he and Rook are the only one catching that something is going wrong. I felt like such a small moment added to his character a lot, and might go with the fact that he chooses to ignore stuff rather than being totally oblivious of what’s going on around him
The last part is actually very sad. I’ve seen a tweet about this before, but to sum up, Kalim tends to downplay negative emotions because his life is perceived as ‘greater’ by many others. It happened once in the main storyline, in chapter 5 I think? Kalim immediately apologized to Grim for complaining after Grim told him that he had it better because at least he made it into the contest.
I guess that’s also why Kalim acted very casual as if nothing happened after Jamil’s overblot. While he admitted the things he did wrong, Kalim didn’t want to register that yes, he should be hurt because his ‘best friend’ just stabbed him in the back. It’s a good thing that in chapter 7, we can see Kalim finally accepted his feelings, as well as the truth about his situation with Jamil. They will take time to heal and communicate, but at least it’s a great start.
