I love this! It’s so heartening to have them added to the relationship analysis. I’m often taken by the similarities between Riddle and Malleus, both in their nurturing, conduct and views. Although Riddle is strict, it can be seen that he doesn’t expect nearly as much of others as he does of himself. He recognizes that his upbringing, studies and skill level is different to others, but he doesn’t treat it as a boast worthy thing (at least not all the time), but rather a simple fact. And Malleus does the same.

Although he often comments on the capabilities and accomplishments of others in an infantilising manner, compared to him, they are in fact infants. He’s about 9 times older than most of the students and his innate skill set dwarfs their hard work many times over, not to mention the fact that he too trains/studies the other fields he involves himself with.

They were both levied with high expectations since their youth, othered from their peers and struggle to relate to the oddities of their schoolmates—but they try. And from their interactions, it seems they share a mutual understanding of this, which may be why they can be especially hard on eachother’s ‘failings,’ but it is also plays into the respect they show eachother.

I really do like how they get around Malleus being used as a means of solving problems and using him as a source of encouragement or rivalry in many cases. This is a good display of that.
